I'm a young aspiring photographer that has a sweet tooth for HDR photography.

Sunrise at Delicate Arch

Today’s image is a reprocessed image from a few months ago, way before I thought about doing a photo blog.  I have learned so much about post processing and onOne Software since finishing the original image (seen here).

Delicate Arch is probably the most photographed landscape in Utah, at least in Arches National Park.  My Dad and I woke up really early in the morning to get to the arch before sunrise.  Of course we woke up a tad bit too late and had to run to the arch.  Boy that was a tough run I barely could get my camera out by the time we reached our destination.  It was so nice when we arrived because there was no one else there except for a few other photographers.  I had never seen the place so dead and silent.  We got to enjoy that silence for about 10 minutes then we could hear what sounded like a bus load of kids coming our way.   The pressure was now on, we knew that we only had a limited time of emptiness to capture the shots we wanted.  A fellow photographer came up to the arch after a bit and told us that it was actually TWO buses that had arrived full of kids.  This shot was one of the last shots I was able to capture before the kids surrounded the base of Delicate Arch.  I actually had to go in and remove two girls making their way over to it.  I have found a landscape like this is where content-fill aware works very well in Photoshop CS5 compared to a scene with a lot of straight lines.

  4. Great detail in the arch and leading up and the rocks leading up to it! Did you use any Focal Point on this image? Love the processing and textures!

    April 5, 2011 at 10:07 pm

  5. Thanks guys for the kind words! I did use focal Point on this photo Chris. I was trying to isolate the arch, and the background was WAY too busy.

Magnificent. The only downside to this is that it really, really emphasizes my desire to be in the outdoors . . . not simply marveling at such beauty on a computer screen!

  22. I spent a few weeks working in Arches National Park a few years ago (camping there every night), and it really is best viewed at sunrise and sunset. When the sun is low there are more shadows and it’s really colourful. Once it gets to the middle of the day though, the sun is so bright that it doesn’t look as nice (in my opinion!)

    Great photo!

Nice one! Where did you take it? And how do you put a Water-Mark?

    April 14, 2011 at 12:00 pm

    • I took it at Delicate Arch in Utah. I did the Watermark using photoshop.

I became obsessed with Delicate Arch when I saw it on the cover of the 1988 Rand McNally when I was a little girl. Finally, two summers ago, I convinced my husband that the eight hour drive to Arches would be worth it. Little did I know how brutal the hike to the arch would be (you did well to go in the morning; 3 p.m. is a terrible time to go). But it was so worth it to get my picture taken in front of the arch. I wish my camera had been as amazing as yours.

    April 14, 2011 at 2:02 pm

  36. What a wonderful image of the arch. Awesome image.

  42. Adam, thanks for a little thrill in my day and congrats on your FP! I’ve not yet been there, but adore Delicate Arch and hope to go some day. I really enjoyed the story behind the pic as well, thanks for taking time to include that.

  45. I have recently just started a blog, and purchased a domain, and I know this probably shouldn’t go under this pages’ comments, but I figured I’d get the best answers. How do you set up an email to go to your blog other than your personal email. Such as; if you set up a blog http://www.blogme.com is there a way to set up an email like info@blogme.com? If anyone can help it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

  48. I wonder how nature crafted this! Wish there was a 1 picture everyday video for the last millions of years of some parts of the planet 😉

    April 14, 2011 at 6:23 pm

    • That would be so cool!

      April 14, 2011 at 6:48 pm

  49. Love the unity of the photo–the arch itself is awesome, but the horizon draws attention, too. Yet it is still perfectly even. The arch is still the main focus. But the horizon also draws the whole picture together. Cool!

    April 14, 2011 at 6:31 pm

    • Thanks, glad you noticed that. That’s exactly what I was shooting for.

      April 14, 2011 at 6:47 pm

  50. The sun is cool, too, I forgot to add! I like sun and shadow contrast in my pictures.

    April 14, 2011 at 6:32 pm

  51. This arch should be called “Cowbow Pants with Chaps” – it looks like the back side of a cowboy in jeans, wrapped in chaps. Go back and take a second look…go on..you’ll see it.

    April 14, 2011 at 6:36 pm

  52. This is seriously a breath taking photograph! In my years to come, I plan on visiting this amazing red rock state. I was looking around for some sites to learn how to take these type of pictures and found this one. I don’t know if it would apply to you as you are already very good at taking great pictures, but check it out anyway. Maybe a photo enthusiast would enjoy it even more. 🙂

  82. Beautiful photo, Adam.

Delicate Arch is one of my favorite places on earth. I remember hiking up to it alone, and there was ice and snow on that small narrow trail with the big drop off right before you see the arch. Beautiful scene.

  89. Lisa

That is beautiful! I visited the arch in the middle of the day. You can’t not be impressed by it, but obviously the colors that you captured are just so much richer than how I remembered it. And yes, crazy crowded. It took some serious patience and crafty cropping to get a halfway decent photo without people. 🙂

    April 16, 2011 at 8:49 am

  90. Wonderfull Image! I’ve always wanted to go to Arches National Park. I’ll have to get there before this thing inevitably topples over.
